yea, that's pretty much what I would expect to happen. Coconuts are the WORST. I was trying to open one at college once... ended up slitting the thing with a one iron from my golf bag.

If you know what you are doing you can split a coconut open with a small rock (say about 2 or 3" across at the most) and a few light taps. Tap in the right place and it just splits right apart and you don't spill a drop of the milk. And I do mean "tap" versus "hammer" or "clobber" or pound with a sledge! lol

Opening it when you do not know where to tap requires a one iron and several vicious strikes, and spills the milk all over the dorm lawn.

What is the secret coconut-opening spot? I need to know in case I am marooned on a tropical island.

If you are marooned Gilligan-style on a remote tropical uninhabited island than you should consider yourself lucky these days to get out of the rat race! ... And you'll have plenty of time to find the secret spot then too -- though a hint ... the three eyes have to be looking at you and then turned a certain way. I'm going to have to look at a coconut to tell you which side goes up as I do it by landmark as it were -- "It just looks right this way ..." sort of thing. And then you don't spill the milk all over the dorm lawn!
